About the Presenter

Georgia Williams (she/they) is a clinical psychologist registrar working in private practice in Perth, WA. They have a particular interest in working with trans and gender diverse adolescents and adults, which is in part informed by their lived experience. Her Masters thesis explored non-binary people’s experiences with psychologists, which she presented at the AusPATH (Australian Professional Association of Trans Health) conference in 2022. They also worked on a submission to the WA Mental Health Commission’s review of the Mental Health Act, regarding TGD people’s experiences of treatment under the mental health act in WA. Georgia is a member of the APS and AusPATH.

 

Webinar Goal:

Even if TGD populations are not a usual area of practice or special interest for them, most clinicians will have TGD clients. Whether gender is part of the client’s presenting difficulties or not, it is vital that clinicians are able to provide gender-informed clinical care. This webinar aims to support clinicians in feeling equipped to competently and safely work with TGD clients.

Webinar Description:

This two-hour webinar will familiarise clinicians with the foundations for providing culturally safe, informed practice with adolescent and adult trans and gender diverse clients (TGD), including:

· An explanation of how providing gender-affirming care fits with person-centered, client-centered, humanistic models of care.

· Foundations of gender identity and diversity, including terminology.

· Common positive and negative experiences of psychological care amongst TGD people.

· Common ethical concerns and how to create a safe therapeutic environment for working with TGD clients.

· Practical, evidence-based strategies for helping clients to explore their gender and cope with gender dysphoria.

· How to use gender-normed assessments in TGD populations.

· Information about medical treatment options in Australia and how psychological care fits within this.

· Opportunities for questions, discussions and reflective practice.
